still uses East Coast feeds for about 10-20 channels, which makes all TV Guides useless. Their pricing policy in zip 92583 keeps them very high compared to San Antonio Texas. They even set uip an office of the President in Orange County CA, and had to close it because of so many complaints. The CA PUC is brain dead and does not care about consumers. The CA PUC has destroyd the free enterprise system in CA by writing more and more regulations favoring a business over consumers in stead of de-regulating.

Title: Good, but expensive
I've had Charter's HDTV DVR service for over a year now in Rancho Cucamonga. The channels are good - only wish there was NFL Network. Installation usually sucks - the installers always seem to leave at the first sign of any signal coming through onto your TV, and then you have to either pull their hair or handcuff them to the door to keep them there until you verify that you are actually receiving enough bandwidth to receive all of your channels - and if you failed at that, good luck trying to explain to somebody over the phone that your signal isn't strong enough and that you need somebody to come out and boost the signal. Their service is horrible, as I have actually been in arguments over the phone with their customer service in the past. Quality of the picture and sound is really good - you're hard pressed to notice a difference in HDTV signals with Dolby Digital. The MOXI unit (the HD DVR) is a love-it or leave-it situation. There's really no true "guide" to speak of - it clumps everything into groups like Kids, News, Sports, HDTV, Movies, etc. The unit seemed to be pretty reliable though.

Title: Good quality when its not pixelized
i rated the picture quality so low because the reception cuts out so so much nowadays. we're going to switch to a new provider because of it. i even have a boosted direct line from the source, and still the picture regularly cuts out/pixelizes every time im watching something. usually cant hear an entire segment of dialog because the whole picture freezes.
time warner has simply spread themselfs too thin and at the time of this writing: cant handle the amount of traffic over their cables. my neighbors who have the same service experience the same pixels i do. its universal amongst time warner.

Title: Not enough HD channels
When HD comes it it is great, but I have been getting drop outs at random times to the point where all HD channels were un watchable for an entire day. If it continues I will have to have someone look at the setup. It could be poor quality cable in my building, but I am not sure why it would work sometimes and not others.
They need to add HD Discovery, they don't have it in Ventura County for some reason, and I don't know why they even have analog channels. I can't get Direct TV in my location, otherwise I would use them (all channels digital, more HD choices), but if you can't get direct tv, its a good second choice.

Another channel not on the list but available from Time Warner is TNT HD which is channel 1121. If you want to see HBO HD or Showtime HD you must subscribe to those channels. If you want to watch INHD, INHD2, HD Net, HDNet Movies, and ESPN HD you have to subscribe to the HDTV Plus Tier which comes out to $5 a month extra. Free channels are CBS HD, NBC HD, ABC HD, KCET HD, FOX HD, Discovery HD Theater, and TNT HD. More channels are supposed to be available soon, but no actual timeline has been presented from the company.

Title: Not too shabby overall
I've had Cox HDTV service ever since it became available over two years ago and have been happy with it for the most part. The available HD programming could be better but it has been steadily improving. I liked that they most recently added TNT-HD (ch. 718) for a total of 13 HDTV channels available. I wish they would add KCET-HD and also KCAL-HD and FSN-HD for Laker games. The picture quality is very good with little compression artifacts and the Dolby Digital 5.1 sound is fantastic. The BEST part is the dual-tuner HD-DVR (Moto 6412), which has changed my tv viewing habits. Also Video On-demand is a pretty cool feature too.

Title: No Clear QUAM
Note, Cox does not send its unencrypted signal in Clear QUAM. I asked their service rep if their channels were unencrypted clear QUAM, he said "Yes, the lower 100 channels are unencrypted." I bought a tunner only to find out their signal is NOT clear QUAM. It may be unencrypted but it is narrow band so it will not work with a lot of stock HD tuners! You will need to buy a tuner that is compatible with their proprietary narrow band signal.

Title: Not enough programming, some MOXI issues
As of now, I'm only getting 7 channels in HD. I was told more would be available this past summer and now they are saying that they "hope" to have the upgrade installed by the end of the year. It's very frustrating to watch a show that is broadcast elsewhere in HD but your cable company doesn't have it. The MOXI is pretty good. I was told it had room for 8-16 hours of HD programming so I have to constantly keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn't get too full. More space would be appreciated. It usually works like a charm, but occasionally an NBC show will record with no sound or a CBS show will record with no center channel sound. The CBS issue hasn't happened since last season, but the NBC issue happened last week. Tried to work with customer service and a guy came out to look at it, but he couldn't help me and never got back to me after saying that he would.

Title: Offering is good; Moxi DVR is garbage!
I switched over from Directv to get HD channels for much less $. When the channel works, the quality of HD is amazing at 1080i. I recently watched US Open and it was great. However, there is some distorted pixilation occaisionally with ABC, and quite often with ESPN HD (for which Adelphia charges addl $1.50/mo).
The real fault with Adelphia is their customer service and the Moxi DVR box. I'm on my FIFTH tech call as I write this. Ugh. The Moxi box is the worst DVR around. Its feature are a joke and it's slow and riddled with problems.

Funny thing. They say they offer KCBS-DT, but they don't. I've sent them an email about it and I got a responce saying they would take a look at it. I don't excpect anything. The other pictures are really nice. REALLY NICE. Especially ESPN. Better lighting.
Regular HD-TV over rabbit ears looks better because it doesn't look as compressed. It's a little detail, but still.
We've also had problems with the PVR, but they will come out and swap it out.

Title: Better than Sattellite in my opinion...
Adelphia is rather expensive, but you get quite a lot of features. The MOXI HD-DVR works much better than expected. However, pictures get choppy on fast movement on almost all HD channels; hence, I took off a star. Still HD looks great though, but I wish there were more channels. Also, no DVI support with MOXI / Motorola unit, even though the unit has the DVI output, Adelphia doesn't support it.

Title: HDTV Charter Comm Channels
Overall, the HDTV signals are quite good here. Discovery, HDNet, HDNet Movies and FOX have the "best" looking signals although ESPN looks incredibly awesome when watching a hockey game. I also like the fact that the HDTV sound signals come in Dolby Digital; I guess that's pretty standard though. Anyway, overall pic quality is excellent. As far as signal connectivity (causing visual artifacts and such) is concerned, occasionally you'll see poor transmissions which causes a lot of artifacts/tiling. It seems to happen most with the major networks NBC, ABC and FOX.
Discovery channel is truly the best looking channel...no doubt because of the footage they film. I can't wait until all of the core network channels provide HD signals (KCAL 9, CBS, KTLA, WB etc.).

Title: Comcast is The BEST forget the REST
I bought SONY LCD and I was able to watch the SuperBowl in HD..YES. Best HD picture I have ever seen. Sound is excelent. Great service and support. The installer was very friendly. They have added channel 180 NFL and NBC Weather Plus Ch 193. Plus don't forget the duel tuner DVR where you can record two channels or watch and record different channels sametime.
Very happy with the whole thing.

Title: HD
The high definition channels look good, except for FOX channel, if there is fast movement image gets choppy, also with HBO HD, fast movement image gets choppy. Discovery HD Theater is the best channel, image is excellent, image doesnt get choppy with fast movement of images, and sound is great.

Title: spectacular hd picture and sound
My new Sony KDF-60W655 is awesome. The picture on movies on the HD stations are better than DVD's. Live sports is so life like that we are just amazed. Adelphia had me on the phone for about an hour trying to figure out how to activate the 5.1 sound from the PCM. They just plain didn't know. They really worked hard on solving the problem, and finally did. I was surprised no one knew how to operated the cable box options. I give them 3.5 overall, and 5 plus for effort.

Title: Charter in 91104
I live in Pasadena, North of the 210. I bought a Panasonic 60" LCD Rear Projection in feb 2004. I had the Scientific Atlanta 3100 box. Eventually Charter offered the SA 8000HD with the builtin DVR for $10 extra. Normal channels look fine but many first time viewers comment on how grainy it looks. Zooming a 4.3 image to a 60" at 480p is gonna look grainy, you just get used to it. NBC offers some content in HD, like ER and other evening drama's. Those look AWESOME. Not sure, but I think its 720p, not 1080i. NBC has pretty bad transmission it sems though. I get occasional artifacting & delays. Sometimes, its so bad I will actually switch to regular channel 4. Rebooting the box doesn't help. Fox has nothing, ever (at least from what I've seen. I don't watch fox anyway.) ABC's HD is kinda weird. Its bigger than 4.3 but not 16.9, kinda in between. Resolution seems to be 720p, not sure though. HDNet & Discovery are the absolute best though, super clear and the sound always seems to be full 5.1, crystal clear; too bad the content is so repetitive. HBO & SHO are also good, but seem to be 720p, not 1080i. Sopranos & Deadwood were a real treat to watch in HD. All of HBO's original programming is in HD. HBO & SHO are both mirrors of their primary channels: whatever plays on HBO channel 500 is playing on HBOHD 777.
A few comments on the 8000HD. The Hard disk is loud. You can hear it clicking away as it records & plays back. Its obvious they use crappy HD's. I have no idea of the size. The interface has no way to tell how much space you have used or have left. However, it does record in full hd. Very rarely, it will have a few skips or hiccups in the recording process. This is my first DVR so I don't know if its common or not. Another plus is that the cable box itself is a dual tuner model. This allows you to either record 1 channel & watch another, or record 2 at a time. (That is very cool since my wife always seems to tape some dumb show like Oprah or a Wedding Story.:-) When recording 2 channels, if you turn the box on, you are forced to watch either of the channels you are recording.
All in all, I'm pretty happy with the whole Charter HD thing. I wish CBS was offered but all in good time. . .
Overall, highly recommended.

Title: Never got an install, period
Although this applies to Adelphia powerlink cable... the result is the same. This clown Jeff Conklin, who is (amazingly) supposed to be the commercial powerlink account rep for Santa Monica, never ever ever ever, and I mean ever, answers his phone. And IF he calls back... it's days or weeks later. I've lost track of how many months it's been since I first requested an install. I even paid $150 to their outside vendor to patch our office building into the local pole outside. But I still have no modem, no service, and no call from "Jeff"; nothing but a dead cable laying for months on the floor. What a joke. I'm going to try something that works... like dsl.

Title: Sick and tired of adelphia
Adelphia's channel lineup is ridiculous. Some HD channels arent even available in my area! I live in an apartment complex, and they made us take down our directv off the roofs! I dont have a clear view to have directv, voom, or dish network. I had to settle with theese guys. The HD and SD picture ocasionally breaks up, channels conk out in the middle of shows, and the customer service is horrible! I am now saving up to buy a house and I cant wait to get rid of this huge pain in the butt. If you have a choice to get anything you want, dont get adelphia! It's just a big waste of money.

Title: Adelphia in Simi Valley
I just got a new RCA DLP HD set with an integrated tuner and was surprised to find out that it could tune the HD channels from cable (ABC,NBC,CBS,FOX,KCET) directly without an external decoder. The picture breaks up occasionally (pixelizes). I installed a directional Yagi antenna and that works perfectly. Since Adelphia had a free three-month trial I had them come out and install a decoder box, so now I have added HBO and Showtime. Their decoder also was experiencing picture breakup, although last night it seemed to be working fine. In any case the service I got from their installer (Jose) was incredible. He came out a second time later in the day to see if the picture was breaking up (it was) and was even offering to run (for free) new RG-6 through the house in an attempt to fix the picture issues. By the way if you haven't experienced HD then you must give it a try! The NBA finals was AWESOME in HD! Many prime-time shows are in HD and they look great - I'm even tempted to watch some of these shows only because they are so vivid. The show based in Vegas with James Caan is just breathtaking and the Tonight Show is better than being there in person!

Title: Setup Average, Results Superior!
The HDTV Signal is fantastic from Adelphia. The long wait while competitors were offering similar services was tough but now it was all worthwhile. PBS and CBS are not offered by others and they have some very good programming that would be a shame to miss. The initial setup was a bit sketchy, with the set top box failing to receive the signal despite multplie calls to tech support and hits being sent to the box, however it took less than an evening to get working, and now works flawlessly. It is hard to stay upset after seeing the picture. Just the price you pay for being an early adopter. Enjoy!

Title: Beware of Low-Ball Pricing
They offer a "intro" digital hi def pkg for $10. After that it goes to $30 EXTRA per month on top of your regular service.
They do the same thing with their internet as well. Intro pricing at $20 - $25, then it pops up to $40+ after a few months.
Get an OTA tuner if you want HD in the Adelphia area. They have a very limited HD offering at this time (mostly local channels) and 1 or 2 HD "free" channel.

Upgraded to digital cable with HDTV in mid-March. Took one week for techs to get service working properly due either to a bad converter box or a bad street connection or both. Main problem is limited number of HD channels available and some occaisional resolution loss when entire scene is being refreshed very rapidly. This, I assume, is a bandwidth/decompression problem.

Title: Adephia in Moorpark
Bought an LG-3100A to try for OTA reception. Since this tuner does cable QAM, tried to see what I could find. Found music channels and a few SD channels I didn't have, plus KABC and KCET HD. Couldn't find KNBC. I have a channelmaster distribution amp that I put in line and only that enabled me to receive the stations listed. Signal on cable is almost too weak without the amp (perhaps due to 6 TV hookups on cable!). Sound on "The Fast and Furious" on KABC was outstanding - 5.1! Still want to receive KNBC - may try another amp or a different amp location on cable to see if I can find it. Waiting for Adelphia to add more channels - also working on OTA - I currently receive two stations and trying for more by aiming antenna better and getting better preamp.

Title: I want my FOX, CBS, ESPN...
Adelphia finally made service available to my area in January, but immediately ran out of boxes. I signed up for the service in mid-January and was supposed to be notified when more boxes came in, but of course they never bothered to call. After an HDTV flyer arrived in the mail I called them to remind them that I was waiting and found out the boxes were available. If you really want service you need to be on top of these guys!
As for the service, the picture on all channels looks great an so far has been glitch free. Sound on all digital channels is also excellent using the optical digital output. However, sound on the analog channels pops and crackles if you use the digital out. I haven't tested the analog outputs yet.
Now that I have an HDTV delivery device in my living room I want more channels! Adelphia's initial offerings are meager. Their website indicated they would offer CBS and FOX in their rollout, but these networks are not part of the current lineup or on the printed lineup card.

Title: Thank goodness it's here
I am really happy with this service and they have more local channels than the DBS guys. I shopped both and learned that the DBS guys require a lot of extra equipment, and use an over the air antenna to get the local channels. PROGRAMMING... I really hope Adelphia has more programming soon, I want CBS, Discovery HD and of course ESPN, I was at their launch and saw it when the Angels played in stadium... Please Mr. Adelphia, bring me these channels.
Overall... HD blows away the standard product especially Monday Night Football...now my wife watches the games. Thanks!

Title: When will there be more local stations?
Just had Charter HD installed in Rancho Cucamonga. Using a Scientific Atlanta 3100 HD Cable Box (for $3 per month). Currently only have a limited number of HD channels; HBO and Showtime (Free because I already subscribe to those on digital cable), NBC LA and Fox LA (also Free), and Discovery HD (extra $3.95 per month). I really want to see additional local stations such as CBS, ABC, UPN, and WB carried by Charter. Where I am located, cable is the only way I can get local HD stations due to mountains blocking the signals.

Title: Adelphia HD Cable - Fullerton, CA
We called Adelphia every couple weeks since we bought out Mitsubishi 42" HDTV in August to ask about HD availability, and they kept pushing back the date. They changed it on us 3-4 times, when we eventually got a flyer in the mail advertising its upcoming availability. The flyer instructed us to visit our local Adelphia store and swap out our old cable box for a new digital (not HD) box for free, but said little about HD availability. When we called, they knew nothing. When we finally visited the store, they actually knew all about it and happily scheduled us an appointment to have the HD box installed. About two weeks later a team came out and hooked it up. The additional fee was simply $5.00 more per month for the HD box rental on our bill. At this time there is very limited channell selections, but the people at the Adelphia store said to expect more at the beginning of the year. One Tip: if u want HD, GO TO THE STORE. They are not advertising it widely or scheduling any HD installs over the phone. (When we called, they denyed HD was even available in my county, when it was). So go get it, and perhaps they will wake the hell up and get more HD programming soon!

Title: Beta Quality Reception
When my HDTV Signal is stable it looks better than Real Life.
I have a 32" Panasonic HDTV 4.3 Tube set. I watched ER last week and had 35 Glitches, Pixel wash, Dropouts and Sync Loss in 50 minutes of viewing including commercials. They have checked my lines inside and out 2 times and then finally admitted to me that they are having trouble with their Server. It will be Fantastic when they get it working and expand the Channel Line-up.
I DO NOT Recommend you spend the $$$ just yet unless you want to be a Frustrated Beta Tester like me.

Title: No Luck
I live in what's called the "hole" just south of CSULB. I'm not sure what stations are actually broadcast in digital HD by Charter in my area, but I bought a LG 3100A receiver that supports over the air and unscrambled cable. I originally bought it for over the air because I wasn't sure what our local cable offered in HD, I didn't want to pay for anything other than basic service, and as well I wasn't sure of the quality I'd get, but since the box I bought supported cable, I thought I'd give it a try. The box picked up a bunch of stations, including Showtime HD and Discovery HD, but these two were the only ones I could watch. All of the other stations would drop the visual, and most of the other stations would not even pick up the audio. I did get all of the digital audio stations though, but as I mentioned, the video channels were all crap. I hooked it up for over the air and it works great! I love it, the heck with the cable. I'll post an OTA report soon.
To note; I tried all kinds of ways to improve my signal, but nothing changed from my original hookup. The bottom line is that I tried it straight in from the drop to my fairly new installed quad shielded cable with no other connections, with and without an adjustable amplifier, and I could not improve the reception a bit.
This and my OTA report are payback for all the knowledge I gained from this site. Thank you

Title: It's About Time...
After months of calling Adelphia, I have an appointment on 18 Oct for a "tech" to activate my new Adelphia HDTV. I can't tell you how many times I called their HDTV "experts" only to be given misleading, and in most cases wrong, information...no matter.
When it was all said and done, I eventually had to go to my local "hole in the wall" Adelphia customer service center in Hermosa Beach to confirm that they were, in fact, offering HDTV. So much for the notification list that I signed up for in June!
Another disappointment is the channel line-up. I've been told that there will only be 3 channels for now (ABC/NBC/PBS) for an additional $10 with HBO/Showtime available for a premium. More channels will be available "soon"...Given their track record, I won't hold my breath.

I just bought an Sony HDTV-Ready TV, and didn't want to fork out $300 for a HDTV receiver. So I called comcast and they offered to lease one to me for $5/mo. I already had their $10 basic service so I only pay $15/mo and I get 4 HDTV Channels for free! They also have ESPN, HBO, and SHOWTIME in HD, but I'm not paying for them.
I had to call 3 times to get them give me the $5/mo HDTV Receiver/Cable box without having to upgrade to a "Digital" cable package. They kept trying to push it, which would've brought me up to $40/mo, but finally they let me have it. It's Great!

Title: Test HDTV in Fullerton Ca, 92833
We had Adelphia come down and use us as a test for their hdtv reception. We only have 5 channels availiable so that is always no fun but the picture is trully fantastic. My channels are 4 (904) 7, HBO, Showtime, and a test channel. I often catch my self toggling between 7 and 907 to compare the difference. Night and Day here people! HDTV is bitchen and I can't wait till the day ALL channels are set up for this. You know, When You go down and buy a new set all they show the demos on is HD. Then you get excited it comes home and it just dose'nt look the same but You except it cuz it's yours now.. HD makes my TV just as good as the day I bought it! Regular channels just look "Out of Focus" when compared to HD. I bought an RCA 38in Widescreen (Tube) w/built in HD as well as built in. The HD channels that I have now handle the wide screen format making this nice setup... Thanx and send MORE channels!!!!

Title: Comcast HD
Poor HD programming; majority in 720p (ABC & ESPN HD)which is not Comcast fault but due to the limited channels, it makes things worse. CBS & Discovery 3-6 month wait for my area. My advice, go with Direct or Dish if you have the $$, they are about to expand to 300 HD channels by 2008, Cable may be 100 by then if you're lucky due to all the expense & gear, permits etc.

Title: Not yet... but soon
Adelphiasocal.com has information up about HDTV coming soon. I called one of their "HDTV Specialists" and I was informed that service should be fully rolled out in my area by the middle of October--a few weeks away--and that they were about to start Beta testing. He took my information as a possible beta candidate, and was all in all very helpful. The website says that HD broadcasts would be available from ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox, PBS, HBO, and Showtime. There will also apprently be VOD (with VCR functions) and SVOD (movies). Needless to say, I'm very excited.

Title: Adelphia Programming and Offering
Although late in getting HDTV rolled out, Adelphia did do an excellent job of scheduling and installing the Motorola DCT5100 convertor.
Only 5 stations are offered now and CSR's don't seem to have a clue or consistent answer on when other stations such as Discovery HD and the rest of the local (L.A. area) networks like CBS and Fox will be added.
Sound quality is very good and consistent. Movies on the premium stations (HBO/Showtime)and local network channels are often upconversions and vary in quality. KCET (the PBS station) is 100% 1080i picture and is fantastic.
Like most others in our area, we want more HDTV over the Adelphia system!!!

Title: Better Act FAST!
Added HD channels and converter box this weekend to see my new HDTV in action. While it's a great way to show off the technology....ridiculous that they do not offer any of the local HD stations or "cable" options such as ESPN-HD.

Title: Cable decoder required
When I first got my HDTV I checked with Comcast to see what I needed for the HDTV signal. They told me that I needed an HDTV tuner to recieve their sighals. So I spent $350.00 on a tuner. When They started broadcasting in HDTV, My box didn't work. So I called Comcast, They then told me that that they scramble their HDTV channels and you need their decoder to watch (a $5.oo per month extra charge). I'm giving them a average on most ratings since I have no idea what the quality is and their lowest rating on customer service. Their mistake cost me $350.00 that I can't get back.

Title: hd signal scrambled?
i own an OTA box which can decode all 18 signal types. my question is this, if i subscribe to the basic comcast cable for the sole purpose of receiving the network hd feeds, do i need to use their box? in other words, does comcast scramble their hd signal for basic service. anyone tried hooking up their OTA box to comcast? thanks for the info.

Title: Got HDTV installed
We finally got HDTV service installed yesterday and looks good so far. Although there are not enough channels available, it is great to have HD in the house. The video quality from Discovery and HBO are awesome. ESPN HD is ok too, but not enough programming. Another negative is that the motorola box that they are using (5100??) is kinda slow. When switching from High Def channel to regular channel and vice versa, there is at least a full 2 second pause. Other than this and the lack of channels, it is great. I can watch Discovery HD all day long. The imagery in HD is just breathtaking. When they get more channels in it will be a must have for all digital cable subscribers.

Title: HDTV in Irvine
Well, I have the standard NBC and CBS and have added ESPN, Discovery, HBO and Showtime.
NBC, CBS and ESPN look OK. It seems to depend on whether the show was recorded in HD. Some shows appear with black bars on the left and right sides.
The Discovery, HBO and Showtime look awesome!
As for the regular channels. If you watch the regular TV using the component video it does not look very good. The picture contains a lot of noise. I would recommend connecting the s-video and watching the regular channels that way. The cable guy told me that they are going to update the software in the cable boxes in August to address the picture problem.
The sound is usually in 5.1 but some channels sound louder than others, so changing the volume is required.
So overall not bad for a first attempt, more channels would be nice which will hopefully appear soon!

Title: Cox Cable HDTV
Cox cable has finally offered HD content this July 2003 and I had it installed immediately. I've been waiting for it for more than a year since I got my HDTV. HD picture quality is excellent and most are in Dolby Digital 5.1 sound. The HD converter box is a Motorola DCT5100 which has a decent array of connections for most old and new high end TV's.
One thing I'm not satisfied is the quality of the "standard" channels (Ch 2 to 100). The picture quality came worse than what I used to have. It seems the box is upconverting everything and makes the channels pixelated and hazy at some times. The RF bypass is also disbled in the box so you cannot watch two channels at the same time if you need to This is useful when you have the picture in picture feature in your TV. The 1394 IEEE is also diabled so I can't record HD content if I wanted to if you have the JVC HD-VHS recorder. The HD picture is what I'm after anyway so I'm happy. Cox said HD is pretty new in the market and it will come with more great features in the future if more customers will demant for it.

Title: Awesome HD Service
Great picture, much more reliable than over the air. More channels than satellite. Pretty good customer service. Latest box. Really great value because I didn't have to buy a decoder and antenna, and there are no additional monthly service charges. I hear they will be adding Discovery and Fox Sports very soon. If you live in Time Warner service territory and want HD, it's pretty much a no-brainer.

Title: Why waist the time
Or the money!
As a person who has seen the best an worest in HDTV over last ten years. This Motorola 5100 box and Cox/OC signal is as bad as it gets! The HTDV signal is lowest grade and the regular channels are looking lot worse! The 5100 Motorola HDTV box Cox's is renting is missing all it's great features. I'm going to return it ASAP and go find the new 6200 motorola box or something better. Or go back to dish! Unless some can tell me what is wrong. I have RCA DTC 100 with SVGA DTV input the Motorola 5100 box from Cox can't hook up this way.

Title: Charter Cable HDTV - do not get
I live in Pasadena, CA, in an apartment building. Beginning of this month [June], I ordered Charter HDTV- I paid the 3.95 rental of the HDTV tuner, and got the HBO, Discovery and Showtime HD broadcast totaling around $25. After trying two boxes, I still did not receive sound through the tuner. I have had Charter cable for 2 years, but with the HD boxes, I could not get sound, even after hours of tech support jargon. The image was OK, but I was told by the Charter rep that I would also get local channels. You do not get HD local channels through charter. I returned the boxes and cancelled my cableTV all together because of the customer service.
I did recently get a Sony SAT HD200 receiver, and am using the Zenith ZHDTV1 HDTV $24 dollar indoor antenna. I get all of the local channels over-the-air at great reception, all the los angeles DTV, and it is free, with 5.1 dolby sound. Save your money, buy an HDTV tuner, and get an antenna. Charter does not have their act together.

Title: Cox is signing up HDTV customers, BUT...
I talked to Cox Cable today. They are signing up people for HTDV but they only have ONE basic HDTV channel (local NBC). Other premium HDTV channels include DISCOVERY+ESPN for $9.95/month and HBO HD (you pay regular HBO premium charges). They are also looking into offering DVR by the end of the year. It might be more cost effective to get DirecTV Total Choice Premier if you want all the premium channels - or get OTA for all local HD signals and forget Cox HD for a while.

Title: Comcast HDTV Southern California
Installation went smoothly; the tech knew exactly what he was doing. However, getting someone with accurate information regarding HDTV in the month prior the install was an exercise in futility.
Picture quality and sound quality are pretty amazing...when it's in HD. Analog channels look pretty mediocre through the component outputs. Fortunately, the digital channels have received a bump in video quality thanks to the Motorola 5100 cable box. Audio and video dropouts have been extremely rare on the HD channels (I've only noticed two). FYI, Fox is not actually in HD, but rather "Enhanced Definition". Programming is quite limited right now, but I have faith that Comcast will soon wrangle in more networks.

Title: HD Cable in LA... finally.
i believe Comcast, whose HD service began on May 29th, is the first cable company to offer HD programming within the LA city limits. Just got my new HD cable box delivered today, May 31. I had been using a Zenith over-the-air reciever for HD purposes until now (but I just returned it now that HD cable is here). The visual quality is the same as it was with the Zenith OTA receiver. The sound is good, but I can't really comment on it yet as I have yet to watch anything that pushes any audio limits. ABC right now is a little disappointing in terms of sound actually. I'm trying to watch the Hockey Finals in HD right now as I write this, but the sound is occasionally dropping out. It's really nice to have PBS in HD. Whenever someone comes over, I know there will definitely be something in HD I can tune into. Not having CBS or WB is a little frustrating, but it's not worth having a OTA box on hand just for those two channels, in my opinion. WB doesn't broadcast much in HD, and CBS, well... I'm not a senior citizen, so CBS doesn't appeal to me. Of course, my heart might change as we get closer to the Super Bowl, which is on CBS next Jan.

Title: Not enough HD programming
To get HD, I had to rent their receiver for $6.95/mo. and subscribe to Discovery HD for an additional $4.99/mo. There was another charge of $3.00 for some interactive programming nonsense. The only other channels available are HBO and Showtime (each for an additional cost). I called customer service about ESPN-HD and they don't know if and when it will be available. The Discovery HD shows are very good in terms of subject matter, picture and sound quality. I discontinued the service after a month and switched to OTA HDTV so I can get the Stanley Cup and NBA Finals on ABC-HD.
