I am forced to pay an additional $10.00 a month for HD Extra Premium. How the f@*k is it that Cable Vision charges nothing extra for HD yet provides all the HD channels, so long as you have the channels as part of your non-HD package? It's one thing to charge extra and provide everything, it's another to charge extra for channels like ESPN HD while it's part of my non-HD package. I can count over 10 channels that are not available on Time Warner's line-up and I have their most expensive package including their DVR service. Some of these are STARZ HD, CINEMAX HD, TMC HD, ESPN2 HD, UPN HD, MTV HD, HGTV HD, FOOD NETWORK HD, WEALTH TV HD, NBA TV HD, NFL TV HD and NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC HD. I am waiting till the end of the year to see one of two things happen: DIRECTV promises to increase its HD offering. If Time Warner decides to do the right thing and offer more HD, I will stay. If they don't, and DIRECTV does, I'm off to DIRECTV. If none of these to two offer more HD, I'm off to Dish Network. They currently offer over 42 HD channels including the local stations. The way I see it, Time Warner thinks it has a monopoly and can treat it's (high paying) customers like Sh*t, we will find alternatives. Heck, Verizon Foist is on its way and AT&T has a similar service being deployed. After spending all that money on my HDTV set, I am not going to sit down and let a bunch of idiots who don't care about me take my money and give me half-ass service. In addition to the DTV channels listed on the check-off list for this report, we also have available: The Movie Channel on 780, Thirteen HD (all high-def programming from WNET—but not a simulcast of the broadcast channel 13) and YES HD (only available for Yankee and Devil games). In the over a year or so I’ve had HD service from Cablevision it has improved considerably. Initially both picture and sound would drop out momentarily fairly often, especially with the broadcast channels, the cable channels were somewhat better. This was especially annoying when using my home theater for sound as it would take a second or two for the amplifier to decode the audio signal after a drop out causing you to miss a few lines of dialog. That still infrequently occurs but nowhere near as often as in the past. My TV is a Sony KV-32XBR400 that I bought in October of 2000 (I’m holding out for bi-directional cable cards—maybe late next year—before I buy my next HD set). It does do 1080i but not 720p which is OK as Cablevison’s set-top box (Scientific Atlanta 4200HD) up converts 720p to 1080i without a problem. However the Cablevison tech that installed the box did not know how to set it up for that and I had to show him. Fortunately I had downloaded the manual from Scientific Atlanta’s web site and knew what to do, the tech certainly didn’t. Training seems to be a problem with Cablevision service reps and their subcontractors who do most of the routine installs. I have a Sony RDR-HX900 PVR which will do a good job of recording the S-Video line out signal from the SA box—but it is not high-def (the component video out, which goes to the TV is the HD signal) and so I wanted to try Cablevision’s High-def PVR (SA 8300HD) to record HD shows. Again I downloaded the manual from SA and it was a good thing I did as the subcontractor installer didn’t know much more than very rudimentary setup and how to hook up the cables. Although the standard cable channels and non HD digital channels were great, the picture on the HD channels was unacceptable. The tech called his supervisor (who only knew just a little more about the box) for assistance and we tried a second brand new box with the same results. Neither the tech nor his supervisor had any idea why this was and it’s strange since the regular SA 4200HD box provides a great picture. I also called Cablevision tech support and got even less help(although at least the phone tech knew how to set up the resolution). Bottom line: for any support for things out of the ordinary, don’t count on Cablevision (and I still can’t record HD shows). Also, If anybody has any idea why the SA 8300HD box doesn’t work well with my TV, I’d love to hear about it. I’d like to ask Scientific Atlanta but there’s no good way for a consumer to get in touch with them.) They no longer require an install visit if you get an hdtv, including the dvr box, so I got the hd dvr box quickly, which has 2 1394 ports, optical and coaxal audio out, hdmi, component, composite, and svideo out, and a sata port for an external hard drive. The box is $5/m plus $10/m for the dvr service, so about $15/m per dvr. Included component cables they gave me were useless, hooked them in and recieved no signal, so you might want to make sure you have extras sitting around like I luckily did. Picture quality is surperb when watching a show thats actually in hd, digital channels look good, analog ones seem to randomly switch being crapola. It seems that they are not ready with their Cablecard software, as three different representatives pointed me in the wrong direction, then when a tech finally came out, he admitted only one tech had the software to program my plasma. Sadly, he wasn't working that day. I have heard numerous complaints about the cards reliability. So, I kept the set top box. Cablevision needs to increase the training their tech's receive. When consumers are spending thousands of dollars on home theaters, they expect much more than someone that can splice a cable to show up at their door. Agree with Brookhaven; nothing is easier than being able to go to the Cablevision center and just pick up the DVR. You simply disconnect your box, bring it back and exchange it (don't forget the remote!). The DVR box has the identical connections (aside from the HDMI-the old box had DVI). The cost is only $10 extra per month, or equal to two "on demand" movies in crappy standard def 4:3 picture. I was up and running in about ten minutes, with about eight high def movies set to record this weekend alone!! Anyone who is shelling out $60-90 per month for IO with HBO/SHO and not taking advantage of the DVR should have their head examined!! Now I can scan the schedule and record any movies that look interesting, even whacked-out stuff on Ch. 744 (The Wiz, anyone?). Only drawback is the lack of a "search" function, like tivo, where you can automatically have the device record anything with a certain title or actor. Verizon's fiber optic is basically limitless. How does an internet connection of 15 mbps download sound at only $44.95 a month. I cannot wait until it is running in my home.
