Reports of DTV Over The Air

The reception of over-the-air DTV signals depends largely on your location and the equipment that you use. This section is designed to allow you to see what people are doing who live near you and are already receiving these DTV signals! Listed below are all reports that were made in the designated market area of Denver, CO.

I get KWHD so far and thats about it. I beleive its reflected off a mountain because the antenna is pointed north. KBDI also comes in with a ya-1713 antenna, but I have to mount in elsewhere on the roof.

Exact Location: 128th and Holly
Terrain: Homes and a hill to the south and southwest
Antenna Model: generic
Ant. Location: rabbit ears inside home
Ant. Information: $6 UHF/VHF rabbit ears
Tuner:
Installation: Self
Comments: My tuner is a Silicon Dust HD HomeRun. (http://www.silicondust.com/) This tuner connects to a computer and will display a ton of information about the signal you are receiving but there is no place on this site to put it. (Lots more than just signal strength)

I was very surprised to find I could receive DTV with just a set of rabbit ears. I can't see downtown or Lookout Mountain from my house because of a hill to my south and southwest.

Comments: KCNC signal variations are very disturbing, and the channel is generally unreadable. All other signals from the same tower are stable. Vector to the antenna site does not match optimal signal from the antenna by at least 15 degrees, so possibly getting signal bounce.

Exact Location: Roxborough/ Arrowhead Shores
Terrain: Flat and hilly to the N & E, otherwise Mountains
Antenna Model: Radio Shack VU-90 XR
Ant. Location: Attic
Ant. Information:
Tuner: Panasonic TU-DST52
Installation: Self Install
Comments: Due to the lack of information and the surrounding terrain I was unsure about going to strictly OTA service but we were tired of getting rippped off by Comcast every month for a bunch of junk we never watched anyway so after canceling the cable I began researching: Poor reviews and high price of Terk antennas lead me to install a Radio Shack V-90XR in the attic (tight fit). It is pointed at a heading of 325 degrees based on geographical maps and signal strengths found at http://www.antennaweb.org.
I also needed a coax cable run from the attic to the central cable box in the basement. Several "antenna installers" wanted upwards of $200.00 to run cable. I found that http://poorjoescabling.com/ was able to do it for much less.
Plug-it-in and viola! I am now getting great HD digital signals on all major stations and have picked up several others not listed herein. I hope this information helps those in the Roxborough and surrounding areas and serves as an example that you don't have to have cable or dish. It's crazy how many people are confused about the digital transition and think that you must have cable or dish or you wont get service. Questions? you can try my spam email at brad12s(at)yahoo(dot)com but I don't promise that i will see it in there.

Comments: HDTV receiver is Envision 26-inch digital/analog model from Costco. It's the only TV in the household.

Anticipate getting DTV Ch 4.1 and better signal strength on 7-9-20 (the Lake Cedar Group) once the Lookout Mountain transmitters are up and running by mid-2008. Can get 4.1 by re-locating antenna, but this results in loss of 7, 9, 20 and/or 31. Antenna is doing a good job considering how little power (roughly 3 percent of normal!) the L.C. Group channels are putting out from the temporary Republic Plaza transmitters.

Antenna has been fine with SDTV signals for 8 years. It's sometimes capable of pulling in low-power analog translators for 20 & 31 (Idaho Springs!).

Comments: I have an attic mounted, large, directional, yagi antenna with preamp, in a less than optimum area of Louisville (behind Sam's Club).
This is without a rotor, roughly aimed toward denver, though I haven't used a compass yet to check the precise orientation. I'm surprised to get 31.1, 2.1, and 20.1 at this orientation,
as they are from lookout mountain. Weird. But I'll take it. 4.1 (CBS)is marginal, only 2 bars out of 5, and I do get occasional audio dropouts on it. The rest seem strong and solid.

Antenna Model: Radio Shack U-75R
Ant. Location: as high as possible in the attic
Ant. Information: Directional
Tuner:
Installation: Self
Comments: Self install. Cheap Radio Shack antenna and unshielded RG-6 coaxial cable. Received most of the Lookout Mountain (KWGN, KDVR, KTVD) stations with just a short piece of coax for an antenna. Nothing from downtown Denver (KCNC, KRMA, KMGH, KUSA)until I bought an antenna and mounted it as high in the attic as I could. Two important things I found. 1. Was worried about my concrete tile roof shielding some signal. It may have, but I'm 20 miles from the signal and still receive all of them fine. 2. Direction of the antenna is extremely important. Must point right at the signal. Use www.antennaweb.org to find out the bearing/distance from your address. I found that if I pointed it exactly at the downtown stations the Lookout Mtn stations were strong enough to still be received fine. If the antenna was moved just a few degrees I'd lose some of the downtown stations. Use a magnetic compass and check you bearing carefully. Antennaweb.org bearings were very accurate for me.

With the Super Bowl and Olympics coming up I didn't want to wait around for either DirecTV or the local stations to get their heads together so I went another direction After doing research on antennaweb.com I decided to go a different way, and picked up the Terk HDTVo. Huge differance! Now I have solid signals on all of the locals any time day or night.

Comments: Played around with rabbit ears and TV (Sony KDF-50WE655). Pointed antenna towards downtown Denver. Picked up KUSA(NBC) and KCNC(CBS)right away. Had TV search for digital signals and got the rest. Couldn't get KMGH(ABC), but that was expected. Nice not to have to buy a $100+ antenna and p#$off my HOA when some old rabbit ears did the trick. Like to have ABC come in for Monday Night Football, but can wait until Dish Network carries locals in HD or KMGH gets their act together and sends a decent signal.

Exact Location: Taft Circle, Arvada, CO
Terrain: hilly, houses, some large trees
Antenna Model: Winegard PR-8800 and 70" UHF/VHF Combo
Ant. Location: Attic
Ant. Information: RS 15-1108 pre-amps on both antennas
Tuner: EchoStar 6000
Installation: Self-Install
Comments: My DTV Tuner is really a Dish 811, but that wasn't an available choice. I see KMGH-DT's signal, as well as KWHD-DT (46) with my tuner, but I can't lock either station. The Winegard PR-8800 is my 6th antenna in an attempt to get KMGH-DT so I could watch MNF in HD, but to no avail. Outside mounting won't pass the WAF, so this is as good as it gets until KMGH increases their measly 1.91 kw of power, increases their 30 feet antenna height, relocates to higher ground or all of the above.

Exact Location: Humboldt HIstoric District w. side of Cheesman Park
Terrain: high rise condos immediately to west

Ant. Location: attic above 3rd floor
Ant. Information: Radio Shack rotor, no preamps or amps,
Tuner:
Installation: self, STB is Sony HD300 not shown on menu above
Comments: All signals are "good" on signal strength meter on the HD-300. Location is very close to downtown but high rise Condo to west blocks direct-to-Lookout Mtn view. This may be troublesome when local n.w. affilliates switch to the new tower.

Inexpensive RS antenna is small enough to rotate about 300 degrees in attic for easy remote tweaking of signal strength. Plenty of signal strength on all channels for great reception of the ABC and CBS channels I was missing.

Exact Location: 56th and Ward Rd.
Terrain: In valley, no line of sight to downtown or Lookout mountain
Antenna Model: TERK TV42
Ant. Location: Mounted on sat dish, east side of house, 10 ft off ground.
Ant. Information: This is the TERK "clip on" satellite dish model.
Tuner: Sony SATHD200
Installation: Self Install
Comments: Tuner is actually the new Sony SAT-HD300. I originally installed the TERK antenna before DirecTV offered local channels, and just left it on the dish after subscribing to DirecTV local chanels. I was quite surprised after hooking up the new Sony SAT-HD300 that I was able to get OTA HD channels, but I got 3 of the 5 channels listed here.

I can't say to anyone that this is a preferred OTA setup at all, but I found it interesting that with such a small, non-directional antenna like the TERK sat clip-on that I got some OTA HD channels.

I will be removing the TERK and installing a larger directional antenna as I'd like to receive ABC and NBC feeds also.

Tuner: RCA DTC100
Installation: Self installation
Comments: On 10/26/03 I was able to receive 3 broadcasts on three sections of channel 38: KBDI. Channel 38-3 was a simulcast of channel 12, 38-4 was broadcasting international news, and 38-5 was broadcasting a banner which is advertising KBDI's future home of 38DT, with no audio. All three were 4x3 format. Signal strength was in the mid 40's on all three. I don't know if these broadcasts are sharing analog transmissions on this channel, or if all three are digital. This one confuses me a bit. I will be installing a new antenna: Channel Master HDTV/UHF model 4228A. This is suppose to be the best antenna available for HD reception. I will be installing this one above my current antenna with rotor. If you have any questions or comments, you may contact me at: columbine1@peoplepc.com Good luck!

Terrain: Antenna outside has direct view of Downtown and Lookout Mountain roof
Antenna Model: Channel Master 4228 (8 bay bowtie) with Powered Preamp
Ant. Location: Outside, 25 foot off ground
Ant. Information: Antenna Pointing 110 degrees from north (directly to downtown) however both Downtown and Lookout Mountain can be views. Preamp installed on antenna and near TV really did t;he trick for consistent ABC (17.01) signal. ~60 Ft of Quad shield Coax
Tuner: Mitsubishi SRHD500
Installation: Tuner is internal to Mits 65712 HDTV, self install
Comments: Saturday NCAA Div I-A and Sunday HD programming just what the Dr. ordered. Fox needs to step and an broadcast in 1080i, 480p for World Series is good but could be better. As stated above, Channel Master 4228 4 bay with a preamp was the ticket for me. am near Ward and I-70 so I am pretty far from downtown. I did not mess with an inside/attic installation because I wanted the consistent signal that an outside antenna would give. The 4228 is less than 1 meter so HOA installation for me was just fine. Should be OK for all due to FCC regulations. Well worth the effort for the outcome. Questions: jlatiola@ball.com

Comments: Update to my August Posting:

My OTA ditigal signals are going in and out. The signal from the tower is still very weak and while watching a progam, picture will suddenly go completely off the air. Secondly, sound quality gets bad at times. Has anybody experienced these problems in Denver? I may need to get an amplifier to boost the signal.
Also, the DTV signals usually are not on the air late night and early morning...is that unusual or normal since this technology is in it's infancy.

Also, Dishnet work has just announced a new HD progaming package, 4 channels of 24/7 HD programming. Just an FYI

Comments: Installation of the OTA antenna was simple. I have a mitsubishi integrated HDTV (WS55909). So, I did not have to hook up the OTA antenna to my echostar 60000 HD receiver. Which is a good thing. The model 6000 receiver requires a $160 upgrade for a 8VSB tuner cartridge. I read it has a fan that is very noisy.

The HDTV shows are phenomomal. It takes TV viewing to whole new level.

The HD discovery and HBO-HD channels surpass any other channels Dish network offers. Definately a good investment. It can only get better!!

Comments: I have tried a couple small indoor antennas, with little to no success! I bought a Radio Shack VU90-XR and set it up in my living room ontop of some cabinets, to test, and imediatly got Fox, and NBC. With a little adjusting I got CBS and PBS. So I went back to Radio Shack and got a VU120-XR(the VU90-XR was only a green, I need atleast a light green, the VU-120-XR is a purple. Anyhow...I now receiver Fox, CBS, PBS perfect 95% of the time, and NBC is perfect about 85% of the time. NOTHING from ABC, sometimes I can get the audio of it. I would love to somehow get them to boost their signal strength! Any ideas? Feel free to email me anytime.... melder57@attbi.com

Installation: Tuner is internal to Mits 65712 HDTV, self install
Comments: Masters looked great in HD as well as NCAA Final Four! I spent lots of time investigating antennas, found the CM 4211A in several articles. Pretty small, ~28"X18". Great antenna. I did not mess with an inside/attic antenna because I wanted highest quality signal without obstuctions. I live in an HOA neighborhood and had no issues due to less than one meter antenna. I believe the effort of installing an outside antenna is well worth the outcome.

To my surprise with only about 10 minutes of adjusting, I got every single available digital network channel with very strong signals. Even ABC. I originally tried 2 different very expensive internal antenna's with very poor results. For about $50 at Radio Shack, got the above results. Pointed basically at downtown, but the key was to also point the antenna more towards the sky.

Comments: Well, I was not so pleased with the results. I am using a Zenith HD-SAT520, not the Sony, but I understand it's practically the same receiver. Currently, the antenna is mounted in the attic. I also tried mounting the antenna outside on a boom on the ground, and could get CBS (and NBC, I think) when pointed south and a bit east (towards downtown). Fox 32-1 comes in whichever southerly direction I point it, but I have yet to see any HD programming. When I switch to 18-1, it jumps to 80-3 and I see some sort of 1080i HD loop. I'm guessing its PBS KRMA. Thinking of mounting the antenna on the roof, but not sure how well that flys with the home owners association. Comments: (Update: see the updated report on February 1, 2003) Fiddled around with both antennas and all orientations. FOX came in consistently, ABC never came in (no Super Bowl for me in HDTV). Others depended on antenna placement, but would not be useful as you had to tweak the antenna for each station. The $40 Silver Sensor outperformed the $100 Terk in all applications. I am planning on arguing with my HOA to hook up to their internal (in attic) antenna next. Will keep everyone posted.

Comments: My receiver is built into my TV (not sure what model number the receiver is). The TV is the RCA 38" widescreen (model F38310JX4). I'm using a small RCA loop and rabbit ear set-top antenna ($30 at WalMart) and it works great. I tried the $100 Terk 55 and couldn't get a single channel (even on the balcony). I also tried the remote control Jensen TV 940 ($80) and only got a few channels (not as strong as the cheap RCA). I only use the loop on the RCA, the Jensen doesn't have a loop (just rabbit ears). Comments: Dedicated RF cable to receiver gave best strength. I got away with RG-59 since I had already installed it many years ago when the house was built before RG-6 was the way to go. Sharing VHF on the same cable from a VHF antenna cut into the gain a bit so left it by itself. Testing on the roof to try for KMGH-DT(no luck) added very little gain so was able to keep this high gain antenna in the attic with good success from the others.

Comments: I last posted on 23 Dec before moving the antenna to the roof. Signal strength is much improved on the roof, compared to what I got on the 5 ft pole in the back yard. I've experimented and found that pointing the antenna just barely east of due south works best at present. BTW, my receiver is a SIRT151, not 150 -- but that choice was not available.

You might want to note that, in spite of the claims that you either receive a superb picture or you receive nothing, that there IS an intemediate state. There are times when one channel or another will show digital artifacts -- pixellation, breakup, freezing, momentary dropout, etc., even with fairly strong signals. This may only happen on one station at a time, or sometimes on two -- but not all. And it doesn't seem to be a daily occurrence -- sometimes two-three weeks with no problem.

Experimentation, combined with a considerable background in other radio (amateur, etc.) leads me to believe that this is caused by multipath, though some brief effects may also be from birds on the antenna. This is in spite of a pretty decent Yagi antenna.

Comments: I spent $100 on the Terk55(Cigar Shape) at Best Buy thinking it would be powerful. It was the biggest waste of money I barely got CBS, Fox and PBS. That was with a lot of fiddling around. I had to lay the antenna in a roof valley. I did some research on another board and someone did the same thing. They switched to the ChannelMaster Stealthtenna. For only $35 I thought I'd try it. Exact Location: Highlands Ranch Pkwy and Wildcat Reserve

Antenna Model: Radio Shack VU-90
Ant. Location: Attic
Ant. Information: 60 ft run of RG-6 and diplexed with the satellite signal.
Tuner: Hughes HSYSE86
Installation: Self
Comments: I had attempted a powered antenna back in May with zero luck. Rabbit ears got Fox and PBS with no issues. With advice found here (thanks!) and a little spare time, I bought an attic/roof mount antenna from Radio Shack a few days ago. Set it up in my family room and got great reception from all channels, although I had to elevate and manuever the antenna for each channel. Mounted it in the attic and after playing with it for a while, got the reception stated above. Tough to get and maintain a good signal from all stations simultaneously. KUSA(NBC) frovides the best picture, but the sound is way low. Every other station's sound seems good. KMGH(ABC) signal doesn't seem to be very powerful and have noticed this in other people's responses. PBS signal seems excellent, but a picture cannot never be fully established. If anyone has any solutions for ABC or PBS, let me know at biggs_70@yahoo.com. Thanks!

Comments: I have a Mitsubishi WS-65869 65" TV /w integrated HDTV tuner.

I can receive Fox and CBS with my indoor amplified bow tie antenna, but the signal strength is much improved with my outdoor UHF Antenna.

My TV recognizes a channel 17 (ABC), but I guess the the signal is not strong enough.

Terrain: Hills south at 120th St. -- otherwise just a few homes
Antenna Model: Radio Shack U-75R UHF Yagi
Ant. Location: On 5 ft pole in back yard
Ant. Information: On 5 ft pole- temp- pointed a few deg. east of south.
Tuner: Samsung SIRT150
Installation:
Comments: My receiver is actually an SIR-T151, not 150. Although Fox has the strongest signal, I get breakup/artifacts a lot of the time. Though the other channels have lower signal strengths, they rarely have problems.

KUSA has program guide, which is wonderful -- wish the others would do that. It's also a headache that no station seems to acknowledge having DTV on website or in TV listings -- must rely on web for that.

Note that I tried a double bow tie UHF antenna in the house, and it worked part of the time, but I kept having to adjust its direction, and often got interference. The Yagi is MUCH better.

Comments: At first I tried the antenna on top of the TV. I was able to receive all of the channels, but at around 50-60% signal. I moved the antenna to an upstairs, spare bedroom and now I get probably around 90% signal.

Today (19 Dec) I found a signal on channel 16. I called the Programming Department at 9 News, and was told that they are testing their Digital Signal, and it would be on full-time by the end of the week.

My receiver was also not listed in the pull-down list. Its a Zenith HDV420.

Terrain: On Hill
Antenna Model: Terk 55
Ant. Location: Indoor
Ant. Information: Amplified
Tuner: Samsung SIRT150
Installation: Self Installed
Comments: I tried just your basic rabbit ears style antenna from Best Buy at a cost of $20 before I bought the Terk. With the cheaper antenna I was able to get the above channels. The problem was I had to keep adjusting the antenna for each channel. So I decided to try the more expensive Terk. It helped improve the signal strengths and now I never have to adjust the antenna. I am thinking about installing it outside to see if that even helps more.

For those having trouble with ABC, the problem might be they are broadcasting from downtwon and not from lookout mountain. Try adjusting your attenna to point towards downtown. Also I contacted channel 9 about getting the NBC feed. They told me they would have a low-power option by the end of December. They where not sure what areas would be able to receive this signal.

My receiver was not in the list above, it is a Samsung SIRT160.

It is odd. I really get two channels for PBS one on 6-1 and one on 80-3. However the 6-1 indicates it has a strong signal but I get nothing. I do however get the correct signal on 80-3. Any ideas?

Comments: I can't get ABC. Signal strength is really low, and won't show any audio or video.

I tried putting up the Terk TV55 (Large Multidirectional Amplified 'HDTV' Antenna) hoping to pick up a better ABC signal, but it was worse for all 4 stations than the old beater, multi-element antenna I had sitting around my house. Arghh!

I get PBS, but with some digitization and audio breaks.

FOX picture comes in great, but have experienced some audio delay (like watching a badly dubbed martial arts flick - frustrating).

Fox 32 is no problem with their tower on Lookout Mountain. Both 35 and 18 will lock in and out except in the morning when there is some local enhancement. I'm getting an analog signal on 17, so there's no chance for it. 21 is just over the hill here, but it's still fairy weak.

In order to get 18 and 35, I'm going to have to get a little more gain at the antenna.
Distance is about 75 miles. Anyone else up North having any luck?
