Reports of DTV Over The Air

The reception of over-the-air DTV signals depends largely on your location and the equipment that you use. This section is designed to allow you to see what people are doing who live near you and are already receiving these DTV signals! Listed below are all reports that were made in the designated market area of Knoxville, TN.

May 14, 2008

Exact Location: Paint Rock Area of Roane County
Terrain: Hills & Trees
Antenna Model:
Ant. Location: Attic
Ant. Information: pre-amp at antenna and tv
Tuner:
Installation: Self Install
Comments: Reception seems to suffer considerably during poor weather, especially high winds. I can only assume this is due to the effect upon the transmission site since my antenna is sheltered in the attic of my house. CBS Channel 8.1 and FOX Channel 43.1 are the most affected by this.

City: Kingston
ZipCode: 37763
County: Roane

Receiving the Following Stations:
NBC WBIR-DT - Usually clear, but is affected by winds blowing over Sharps Ridge
ABC WATE-TV - Usually clear, but is affected by winds blowing over Sharps Ridge
CBS WVLT-DT - Usually clear, but is affected by winds blowing over Sharps Ridge
FOX WTNZ-DT - Usually clear, but is affected by winds blowing over Sharps Ridge

Receiving Other Stations Not Listed Above:
PBS Channel 15.1 & 15.2 Good Reception. CW Channel 20.1 Fair Reception. FOX Channel 39.1 & 39.1 sporadic based on weather.

Exact Location: Powell
Terrain: Trees, Hills
Antenna Model: Antennas Direct DB-2
Ant. Location: Outside, about 5 feet off the ground
Ant. Information: http://www.solidsignal.com/prod_display.asp?PROD=AD-DB2
Tuner:
Installation: Self Install
Comments: Reception isnt quite as good when I tune using my DirecTV HD receiver as a tuner.

But using my Sony SXRD TV's internal tuner is fantastic. Channels 6, 10, 15, and 43 all come in at 98%. Channels 8, 20, 39, and 54 come in around 80%.

For great info about choosing an antenna based on your location, go to antennaweb.org.

I am only 6 miles north of Sharp's Ridge, so reception should be pretty easy at my location.

May 21, 2006

Exact Location: Just inside city limits
Terrain: Hilly, trees, located in valley.Poor reception area!
Antenna Model: Channel Master CM 3671 UHF/VHF
Ant. Location: Outside, next to home. 25 feet of mast height!
Ant. Information: No amplification
Tuner: Sony SATHD200
Installation: Self install
Comments: My area is a headache for UHF/VHF and FM reception!
I am located approximately 60 miles from the transmitters in Knoxville, TN., more or less in a valley surrounded by hills, trees, and some houses.
An outside antenna is a MUST for good reception of UHF/VHF/FM. My antenna cable has a splitter and runs to both my tv, and to 2 FM tuners with excellent results.
I tried 4 different brands of outside antenna before deciding on the Channel Master CM 3671 crossfire VHF/UHF combo antenna.
The others were 2 Radio Shacks including their biggest VU-190XR, their VU-90XR, UHF/VHF combos, and the AntennasDirect DB-8 UHF only antenna.
All worked good. The AntennasDirect DB-8 SLIGHTLY outperformed the Channel Master, but not by much!
But since it was UHF only, I could not receive WMAK channel 7.
The biggest Radio Shack was great, but I could not receive Channel 7 on it either.
The smaller Radio Shack was good as well. I could receive channel 7 with it, but I could not get channel 8 [WVLT-DT], or channel 15 [WKOP-HD] with it.
My mast has to be exactly 25 ft. long for optimum reception of all the channels. In other words, my antenna is located approximately 25 feet up from the ground. Any higher or lower and Channel 8 and channel 15 drop completely out!
An indoor antenna does absolutely NOTHING in my area.
I do not use a seperate box for local OTA HD broadcasts. My tv is a Sony KDS-36XS955 36" CRT tv, and has the digital HDTV tuner already built into it.

City: Tellico Plains
ZipCode: 37385
County: Monroe

Receiving the Following Stations:

Receiving Other Stations Not Listed Above:
PBS [WKOP-HD]and [WKOP-SD] Channel 15. [17 on UHF]. Very, very, rare drop-out. Signal strength usually averages 62%. Must have 25 ft. of antenna mast height to receive it. [WMAK-HD] and [WMAK-SD] Ch 7 VHF.Usually excellent reception. Averages 84 to 88% signal strength. Still it very rarely drops out for some reason?

Comments: I had to hook up an indoor antenna along with my outdoor antenna to receive all the channels. And even that way I was having trouble with ABC Wate Channel 6. The best way to get all HD signals is to get a Power Amplified Antenna Outdoors on your roof.

Ant. Location: rooftop on tripod
Ant. Information: uhf 91 element no booster 75' RG 6 run
Tuner: EchoStar 6000
Installation: self install
Comments: I cannot get lock on WVLT 8 DT31, WKOP 15 DT17 and Pax 54 DT 23. Signal on all three 49 to 56. I"m actually using dish network 811 newer version of the 6000 and it requires a signal of 60 to lock. Also get Ashville 33 (analog watchable) no lock on digital DT 25 signal 49 to 58. I'm going to try stacking 2 of the 91 xg and will report back. The 91 XG is by far the best UHF antenna here's a link to check out gain. If you having any drop outs this will solve problem and 90 day money back if it doesn't work and a lifetime warranty. No I do not work for or making any gain with this company!

Antenna Model: Jensen
Ant. Location: inside TV top
Ant. Information: amplified type
Tuner: Samsung SIRT151
Installation: self-installed
Comments: Still have some technical problems.. a lot of SD-HD switch during programs, especially between program and TV AD switch.. A lot of frozen dots than I like to see...Still waiting true Dolby Digital sounds from CBS and NBC -- there are huge sound differences between DD-5.1 and DL-2.0. ABC's Sunday night HD movies (especially these Disney ones) are the best (better than DVD's !). Just hope Monday night football will be in HD.

City: Knoxville
ZipCode: 37917
County: Knox

Receiving the Following Stations:
NBC WBIR-DT - HD for some programs (Jay Leno), no DD sound (2.0 only)
ABC WATE-TV - HD - some prime time programs, SD for others, DD-5.1 sound for HD programs, The best picture and sound when it works (such as Sunday night's Disney Movies)
CBS WVLT-DT - Same as NBC, no DD sound (2.0 only)
FOX WTNZ-DT - SD only, no HD yet.

Terrain: residental area
Antenna Model: Jensen
Ant. Location: inside (TV top)
Ant. Information: amplified
Tuner: Samsung SIRT151
Installation: self
Comments: My location is all sightseeing distances from the towers.

I hope NBC will start to broadcast sound in true DD-5.1. NBC's 31-2 is default to widescreen format so all the pictures are distorted (Fatter!!!). However, it is repeated news channel anyway.

City: Knoxville
ZipCode: 37917
County: Knox

Receiving the Following Stations:
CBS WVLT-DT - It is no air yet. Tower is still up.
ABC WATE-TV - Picture and Sound (DD-5.1) are excellent when it works. But it seems it has a lot of technical difficulty.
NBC WBIR-DT - Picture is not as good as ABC. Sounds bad (DD-2.0 only). More stable than ABC.

Receiving Other Stations Not Listed Above:
FOX 43 -- Not HD, only DTV. Picture and sound are OK for DTV. 4X3 box is hard on widescreen TV.
